Dezhou Experiment Station of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (DZCAAS) was established in 1960s，as a branch of the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (Original Institute of Soil and Fertilizer Sciences). The station is one of the oldest national field research stations specializing in improving saline-alkali soil quality and low-yield land.
In 1966， a collaborative field experiment site “Integrated Management of Drought, Water-logging and Saline-alkalinity by Groundwater Irrigation and Drainage” was pioneered in Yucheng，Shandong province on 13900 Chinese acres saline-alkali wild- land. Under the central management of China National Science and Technology Committee， this collaboration was carried out among CAAS，Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)， Shandong Agricultural University and so on.. This led to a large-scale of effort for saline-alkali soil improvement. After the relocation of the Institute of Soil and Fertilizer Sciences(ISFS) to Dezhou, Shandong province. In 1970， a new field experimental site for saline-alkali soil improvement was established in LinXian, Shandong province. Based on these two experimental sites and having attracted some soil experts from ISFS and new staff from universities， a field research station specializing in saline-alkali land improvement was officially formed by the Ministry of Agriculture on September 19， 1980 at the location used to be occupied by ISFS in Dezhou after the relocation of ISFS back to Beijing. The first director of this station was the late well-known soil improvement expert， Professor Wang Shouchun， who was also elected as a representative of the Peoples’ Congress of China.
These long-term scientific research projects at the station have resulted in extraordinary achievement. After decades of effort， the soil quality and productivity in the large area of saline-alkali wastelands have been improved significantly in Yucheng and Linxin, resulting in fundamental improvement in rural environment and agricultural productivity. The research outcomes from saline-alkali improvement research have been extended to the northwest region of Shandong and the whole Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. These also provided impetus to other research programs on saline-alkali soil improvement nationally and internationally. In 1980， the research project “Integrated Improvement of saline-alkali land in north Shandong” won a gold medal for Agricultural Technology Advancement by the Ministry of Agriculture. Since the commencement of the “6.5” national science and technology key project in 1981， key research projects on the management of Huang-Huai-Hai plain have been carried out in the two experimental sites at Yucheng and Linxin， which are research branches of Dezhou Experiment Station. In the past years， Dezhou Experiment Station has hosted several hundred researchers who took part in various collaborative research projects from various institutes of CAAS. These projects covered many aspects， including integrated management of saline-alkali soil, prediction of soil salinization, productivity improvement in marginal land， sustainable agriculture, high yield and efficiency of grain and cotton production, regional husbandry, etc. Research achievements from these projects won more than 10 awards (prizes ranging from special class, first, second to third class) from the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1993, the research achievement in “Integrated management and agricultural development in marginal lands of Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (HHHP)” from research projects carried out the two experimental sites have won the special award of national science and technology advancement. In 1995, the project “Integrated research on Yucheng sustainable agricultural development” won the Agriculture Prize of the Academy of Science for the Third World Science of the United Nation.
These great research achievements have produced profound impact nationally and internationally. Over the past decades, Dezhou Experiment Station and its field experimental sites have hosted more than 11000 visits for inspection, training, and collaborative research, by specialists, scientists，researchers，governmental officials from 28 provinces of China，UN and more than 40 other countries. The station has also established research collaboration with Chinese Academy of Science， China Agricultural University and others. It has also established long-term research collaboration with Japan，South Korea and Israel.
Dezhou Experiment Station and its two field experiment sites are responsible for carrying out key national R&D projects, including regional rural management, saline-alkali land improvement, productivity improvement in marginal land, high yield and efficiency of grain-cotton crop production, and rural husbandry development etc. It is a key basic experimental research of CAAS, with the emphasis on research and development projects for Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (HHHP). It is also the unique large field research station specializing in saline-alkali soil improvement in China.
The leaders of the Center LiPeng, ZhuRongji ; the leader of Shandong Province JiangChunyun, ChenJunsh etc had visited Dezhou Experiment Station successively to investigate and guide our work. In June 1988， Premier LiPeng visited Yucheng experimental site, he pointed out that “The achievement of Dezhou station，has offered helpful experience to the agricultural development of Huang-Huai-Hai Plain even the whole country".
In 21st century, the station is playing an increasingly important role in key national science and technology projects of China, with the great support of the efficient research team armed with up-to-date knowledge.
